Propositional literature analysis
Jane Austen (16 December 1775 -- 18 July 1817) was an English novelist whose five major works are critical commentaries on the life of the landed gentry in late 18th Century England. Plots in her novels often reflect women's reliance on marriage for social status and economic security. Her work criticized the sensuous novels of the second half of the eighteenth century, and her novels were part of the nineteenth century's shift toward realism.
The theme of the 2021 essay competition is "The Art of Jane Austen". It includes a wide variety of arts, including fine arts, performing arts, decorative arts and crafts. Jane Austen played the piano, embroidered, participated in art exhibitions and plays. Art also plays a role in her novels. In your essay, discuss how Austen used art, whether to reveal character, resolve social status, advance the plot, or otherwise make a point. High school students: You can discuss her use of art in one of her novels, but you are welcome to read more. Undergraduate and graduate students: You must discuss Austen's use of art in her novels. You can use the same art form in each or compare different art.
The 2022 Essay Contest topic relates to the theme of our upcoming Annual General Meeting: Jane Austen’s first published novel, Sense and Sensibility.
Family relations loom large in this book, and Austen has more than one story to tell, with four sets of siblings and notable mothers. Essays can focus on relations between siblings or pairs of siblings, between mothers and their offspring, or perhaps on characteristics (apart from sense and sensibility) embodied by a related or unrelated pair.
